Box Lacrosse 101 for Parents

If you're new to box lacrosse, you're not alone—and you're in the right place.

Box lacrosse is a fast-paced, high-energy version of the traditional field game, played indoors on a smaller, enclosed surface (often a converted hockey rink). With fewer players on the floor, tighter spacing, and continuous action, box emphasizes quick decision-making, precise stick skills, and physical toughness.

It’s incredibly exciting to watch and even more powerful for player development—especially for younger athletes transitioning from field to box.

Why Should My Child Play Box?

Box lacrosse offers major benefits for players at all levels:

  • Faster Skill Development: More touches on the ball, quicker passes, and constant motion mean players develop faster.
  • Better Decision-Making: The smaller playing area forces quicker reads and smarter movement—perfect for improving lacrosse IQ.
  • Toughness & Confidence: Box is physical (but safe), helping players build resilience and comfort under pressure.
  • Field Lacrosse Advantage: Skills learned in box translate directly to the field—especially for offensive creativity and defensive footwork.

Is It Safe?

Yes. While it’s a contact sport, box lacrosse is highly regulated and designed for player safety. We play under modified rules that prioritize safe checking, controlled contact, and proper equipment usage. All our leagues are coached and officiated with safety and sportsmanship in mind.

What Gear Is Required?

For youth and high school girls, standard field gear (stick, goggles, mouthguard) is typically used, with optional padding.

For boys and older divisions, box-specific equipment includes:

  • Helmet with face mask
  • Mouthguard
  • Gloves
  • Arm and shoulder pads
  • Rib pads (recommended)
  • Athletic cup

More detailed gear guides will be available under the appropriate tabs on this page.

Still Have Questions?
